Another Great Rafting Trip on the Lehigh

Nearly 30 scouts, scouters, and their family members embarked on a white-water rafting day on Pennsylvania’s Lehigh River on Saturday, part of a Troop 17 tradition going back many years.

To take advantage of better weather and accommodate school exams, the traditional overnight camping trip was changed to a day excursion, and siblings were invited to join in the fun. The day was warm, sunny, and beautiful (despite a stormy forecast) and the fast-flowing river produced numerous exciting stretches of white water during the scenic nine-mile journey. The scouts remembered their safety instructions and demonstrated outstanding teamwork as they worked together to navigate the challenging rapids. Along the way, Troop Committee member Mr. Kevin Radics recorded the action on his GoPro, and generously shared a short video with attendees after the trip.

Special thanks to Assistant Scoutmaster Alan Kirshenbaum, who served as adult trip lead, and Josh K and Kevin M, who served as scout co-leads. Thanks also to the many volunteers who served as raft captains and drivers. Looking forward to another challenging river adventure next year!

Eagle Scout Leadership Project

Dear Troop 17 Scouts and Families,

I am starting my eagle project this month and am looking for volunteers and funding to execute my project. My project will be teaching "Introduction to Robotics" classes at After Care Program at the Valley Settlement House (33 Tompkins St, West Orange). I will teach a 5 week class at the house to teach the children Lego Robotics and get them involved in STEM. Over the course, students will be taught about building and programming robot and be asked to complete several challenges. I will run 10 classes from 5:00PM to 6:00PM starting from 21st of May, and finishing up on 20th of June. It will run twice a week, every Mondayand Wednesday

You can donate to the project at https://www.gofundme.com/robotics-at-valley-settlement.

Additionally, scouts can sign up to help at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/4090F49ADA82EA2FD0-teaching. Scouts can choose which day over the month they will be able to help.

Please email me at somil.wl@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns.

Yours in Scouting,

Somil A.
